Shingle Bells

Shingle Bells

Today took an interesting turn in my neverending joke of health.  I woke up with a searing pain on my back, reached back and felt bumps.   I took a look in the mirror and there were lovely red spots which hadn’t been there the night before.  I rushed off to One Medical – thankfully it is super easy to secure an appointment there.  Told the doctor my symptoms and before she even looked at it she said, “I’m sure it is shingles”.  Yep.  Turns out that it was.  Got some drugs including vicodin because I was warned that it was going to be very painful.  Then came home to lick my wounds.

I guess my immune system has taken a hit in the last weeks.  I push myself pretty hard and my body loves to have the last laugh with me.  I have been feeling super dizzy, nauseous and feverish in the last two days and I guess now I know why.

What are Shingles?

In case you want to know about shingles you can think of them as a more localised, painful version of the chicken pox virus that lies dormant in your system.  Lovely.  I’m not contagious (except for to kids that haven’t had chicken pox yet) and it should be a one time thing (fingers crossed).  After this, I am for sure getting my shingles vaccination.

Shingles is a disease characterized by a painful, blistering skin rash that affects one side of the body, typically the face or torso. This condition may also be referred to as herpes zoster, or simply zoster.

Hey, thing to be grateful for is that I don’t have it on my face!  There is always something that could be worse.  Yay.  So I will sit at home for a few days and cook and be in pain.
