I went to see the Judd Apatow produced movie Forgetting Sarah Marshall and I left the theater, once again, satisfied with the flick. It seems that most everything this guy touches is popular these days. From the 40 Year Old Virgin to Knocked Up to this film. It got me wondering what is it in the formula works for audiences…
It’s actually pretty simple.
Dorky, semi-loser guy has no girl / has lost girl, lost of male bonding and toilet humour, meets girl (who is inevitably hot), does something to fuck it up, despite all somehow romances girl and gets her in the end.
The beauty is that these plots appeal to everyone.
These movies are basically rom coms (girls love that) and toilet humour (guys love that) – so everyone wins. No compromise viewing!
